Synchronous Diaphragmatic Flutter, or commonly known as hiccups, is the uncontrollable involuntary contractions of the muscle sheet which is located below the ribs. The sheet muscles, known in layman’s term as the diaphragm, functions along with the reflex arc which is the neural pathway where the reflex signals pass through. Although hiccups are common and natural occurrence in the human body, people often don’t know what causes chronic hiccups.

Fortunately, hiccups that are caused by underlying Gastroesophageal Diseases are quite rare. Infantile hiccups are normal and it is nothing to be scared of. Infantile hiccups occur when the baby sucked air while drinking the milk in the bottle.

Expectant moms experience hiccups themselves. It occurs often during the last few days of the first trimester or the first few days of the second trimester. The occurrence of hiccups during pregnancy is more frequent because the pregnant woman’s intake of air is increased by 30-40%.

Hiccups are common after a surgical procedure especially if the procedure done is a back or gastric surgery. It may also be attributed to the body’s reaction towards the anesthesia.
Hiccup Remedies
If hiccups are caused by a medical condition, the way to stop it is to cure the medical condition. Hiccup remedies could also help in eliminating hiccups. Some of these home remedies are drinking a glass of water without breathing or stopping in between, letting a teaspoon of sugar dissolve under their tongue, patting on the back, sucking a fresh lime or ginger, distraction by singing or talking to someone, breathing on a paper bag, or holding their breath as long as possible.
